A Siamese cat is an unusual breed of cat. It has the usual trait of cats in being independent but it does not like being solitary or lonely. It is a people-orientated cat, preferring to be part of your family. It learns to ask for your time and attention and also insists that you give them to it.
The Siamese cat will make noise to attract your attention and maintain it. It resembles the dog in its faithful devotion to its owner, unlike other cats who don't cling to their owners. It is willing to be trained and you can train it to walk with a harness and leash. It will walk with you because of its devotion to you. The bad trait about the Siamese is that it is jealous cat that will throw tantrums or fits of bad behavior whenever it feels jealous.
It is important to know that the Siamese possess a heat-sensitive gene. Siamese cats living in warmer regions have pale colored coats. Their counterparts in colder regions show darker colors. A Siamese has different colors throughout its body as the colors show at cooler extremities of its body. A kitten needs a year to fully develop its colors.
Your Siamese cat needs daily routine of its coat. Use a medium-hard brush. Clear any ear wax from its ears. Contrary to belief, cats need baths too. Bathe your Siamese cat every fortnightly.
Train your Siamese kitten to use the cat litter tray. The kitten will show signs of relieving itself by searching for some suitable spot. Putting it in the litter tray every time it shows signs of wanting to go will teach it that this is the correct place to do its business.
Your Siamese needs to scratch to trim its nails. Provide a cat scratch-post and direct your cat to do its scratching there. You can teach it that destroying your furniture is a bad thing.
Always walk your pet Siamese with a harness and leash. When travelling, use a pet carry box for its comfort.
It is best to feed your cat commercial cat food. It is a balanced diet with no need for supplements. You can try to give it dry or moistened and see which type it prefers. Have a kitty dish of fresh water at a corner for it to avail itself. If you want to feed your Siamese vegetable or fruit, they need to be boiled as it can't cope with digesting raw greens.
Indications of ill health are lethargic behavior, runny eyes or runny nose. If your cat scratches its ears and shakes its head frequently, there may be ear mites present. Visit your vet for vaccinations and follow-up booster shots.
For cat safety in the home, keep your cat away from the kitchen and get rid of your toxic house plants. For apartment dwellers, close your windows or secure fine screen netting to prevent your cat leaping out of the windows.
